Talking Scotch With Mad Men's Christina Hendricks

Eyes up here, guys.

Check out this Men's Health interview with Christina Hendricks where she discusses all things scotch.

Christina proves that passion for scotch isn't just a boys club nowadays.  She is a known connoisseur who hosted an exclusive whisky pairing event last summer.  Maybe that explains why she seems to fit so well in the cast of Mad Men.  Of course I'd personally watch her in just about anything.  Even a 6-part miniseries where her character was in a coma.  Did I just type that?

Scotch on a Plane in "Bridesmaids"

What kind of site would this be if we didn't include the scotch/airplane scene from Bridesmaids? The scotch which Kristen Wiig is drinking isn't actually identified in the film, but that's not the point.

There's a reason why you don't chug scotch like it was Gatorade, and this hilarious scene from the 1:06 mark in Bridesmaids demonstrates exactly why.  The clip below has been edited down from its original 10 minute length but the whole movie is amazing.  Big thanks to the folks who've been emailing and tweeting suggestions for various posts, including this one.  Please keep 'em coming.

The Brian Cox Scotch Pronunciation Guide

Big thanks to the folks over at Esquire for this awesome segment.  You are about to witness over 40 clips of the brilliant Shakespearean thespian Brian Cox correctly pronouncing various scotches.  The clips are very short and there is an auto-play feature as well.
This is a great reference, especially for ignorant North Americans like myself who have been walking around butchering these names for years.

Ben Stiller Drinking Laphroaig in "Greenberg"

We asked our followers on twitter to guess which Ben Stiller movie would be featured in the next post.  Nobody got the correct answer, although Little Fockers and Anchorman were great guesses.  Stiller makes a cameo in Anchorman and that movie does have a classic line about scotch (or should I say "scotchy scotch scotch"?) spoken by Will Ferrell.  Anyway, we'll save that clip for our Anchorman post which is coming soon.

The film we were referring to is 2010's Greenberg.  There is a Laphroaig sighting at the 16 minute mark.  If you look closely you'll spot a bottle of Cragganmore on the shelf also.

All Three "Iron Man" Scotch Sightings!!!

"Give me a scotch I'm starving".  One of many great lines uttered by the Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) in 2008's Iron Man.  I've watched this film several times and it is definitely one of the bestestest superhero movies ever.

Anyone familiar with the history of the Iron Man saga knows that Tony Stark is an old school whisky aficionado.  The character itself dates back to 1963 when he first appeared in the Tales of Suspense comic book series.  The first issue of The Invincible Iron Man debuted back in '68 and Tony has been sipping his way through countless adventures ever since.  I should probably point out that Tony often takes his imbibing a little too far and has a history of difficulty in controlling his alcohol intake.  Stark's troubles with alcohol are featured prominently throughout the comic book series and even on the cover of the November 1979 issue seen here.

Jon Favreau stated in a May 14th, 2008 interview with Howard Stern that he planned to delve deeper in to Iron Man's alcoholism in future films, but that aspect of the plot never seemed to materialize in the 2010 sequel.

Check out the clip below which features all three whisky sightings.  I had to watch the first Blue Label scene four or five times in order to spot the bottle.  You might also be able to barely spot a Black Label to the right of the Blue.  Let us know if you can name the others.

PROHIBITION: Great Film for Whisky Ethusiasts

With the second season premiere of Boardwalk Empire upon us, now's as good a time as any to bone up on your prohibition era history. Directed by tireless documentarian Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, Prohibition ($40) is a six-hour, three part documentary looking at the dark days between the passing of the 18th amendment and its glorious repeal in 1933, complete with two hours of bonus content and plenty of "pan slowly over an old photo" shots — after all, there's a reason it's called the "Ken Burns Effect."

Via Allegro Ristorante is a Connoisseur's Paradise

A few friends and I recently had a chance to experience the world famous Via Allegro in Toronto and I had to mention it here.  Not only for the amazing food, but for the INSANE whisky menu.  Forgive me for breaking away from the usual film and television scotch sighings you've come to love here at SC, but it had to be done.  I can pretty much guarantee you've never seen a selection like this anywhere in the world.  Sommelier Joseph Cassidy has thought of everything.  We studied the whisky menu for the better part of an hour before finally deciding to sample various Bruichladdichs.  We were the last to leave the restaurant and stayed a little past closing while discussing food and drink with the knowledgeable staff who hopefully didn't mind our questions.

Via Allegro Ristorante has to be experienced to truly appreciate the passion which has gone into it.  If a restaurant could be a work of art, then this would be it.  We came for the whisky but were also blown away by the food and the ambiance.  Wine enthusiasts would be in heaven here too.  Here's a great review of Via Allegro which delves deeper into the world-famous wine cellar.

Being that this site is dedicated to videos of whisky appearances, I edited a quick video of the interior which I think you'll enjoy.  And here is the link to Via Allegro Ristorante website.

Scotch Cinema Will Return After These Messages

Scotch Cinema will be taking a short break (about a week) but there is lots more to come including a new iPhone app.  We will also be able to blog on the go shortly thanks to the new "Blogger" app.

A big thanks to everyone on Twitter and Facebook who have been flooding us with sightings which we never would have found without your help.

See ya soon!  In the meantime, check out this non-sensical Suntory ad featuring Keanu Reeves.  The internet is full of Japanese commercials featuring A-list actors who wanted to make a little extra scratch without destroying their brand stateside.  These respected thespians never thought in a million years that the advent of Youtube would blow their sellout scheme wide open.

Dalmore Spotted in "Malice"

Can't say enough great things about this well-crafted thriller.  The movie's not too bad either.

Glad we've finally found a Dalmore sighting.  And we couldn't have asked for a better scene than this one from the 1:07 mark in "Malice".   The back and forth between Bill Pullman and Anne Bancroft is very compelling during this pivotal scene.  But more importantly, the whisky plays an important part.  The best sightings are the ones where the Scotch is used for more than simple window dressing.  Check out the clip below.  Its a little long but well worth it.

"Malice" is now available on DVD:

Another Entourage Sighting!

I never figured Ari would be A Chivas kinda guy.  Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Any true Entourage fans out there know that Ari Gold is one of the greatest characters on television and is played to perfection by Jeremy Piven.

[Spoiler Alert} Ari is seen here drinking what appears to be the classic 12 year old Chivas after finding out his wife is filing for divorce.  The scene takes place at the end of the August 21st episode entitled "Motherf**ker".  Appropriate title considering Ari drops the F-bomb seven times in the first twenty-four seconds.

A Vintage Glenlivet Bottle in "The Mummy"

Here's the final Glenlivet sighting of our week-long series.

At the 48:41 mark in the film we see that Jon Carnahan (John Hannah) discovered a cracked bottle of Glenlivet in a bag.  Luckily there is still plenty of the delicious single malt to go around.  Even when all hell is breaking loose around them there is still time to steal a few sips.

The second scene comes shortly afterward and features Rachel Weisz and Brendan Fraser.

Hope you've enjoyed all the Glenlivet sightings.  Be sure to let us know if you spot any brand appearances yourself.

Tim Allen Drinking Glenlivet in "Galaxy Quest"

1999's Sci-Fi comedy "Galaxy Quest" is a very underrated movie.  I remember not really expecting much from it when it first came out but I ended up laughing my ass off.  Look for an appearance from a much younger Rainn Wilson (Dwight Schrute from the office) playing a minor role as Lahnk the alien.

The large Glenlivet bottle shows up fairly early here.  About 11 minutes into the film.

As always, here's our previous Glenlivet sightings.  Only one video left to close out our week-long Glenlivet sightings.  Any guesses?
